HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc365-6W
Mr. Beith

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what cuts he proposes to make in education programmes.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

The reduced level of RSG in 1979-80, announced by the Chancellor in his Budget speech, will affect expenditure on education by local authorities. In addition, as part of the specific reductions announced by the Chancellor, the following savings are to be made on expenditure in 1979-80 controlled by my Department:

£ million
1. Not introducing the proposed pilot schemes for mandatory grants to 16-18 year olds who stay on at school or college full-time. 10
2. Reduction in capital expenditure on education 14
3. Increases in fees in further and higher education for overseas students 6
4. Reduction in recurrent grant to universities, the Open University and other higher education colleges 9
5. Miscellaneous savings on education. 11
