HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 c96W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many National Health Service hospitals are refusing to allow mothers of children under six years of age to remain with their children in hospital while the latter are receiving treatment or an operation; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

The information is not available centrally. This is a matter for the health authorities who, in developing their policies, have been guided by the principles mentioned in a circular from my Department in 1971. This recognises the emotional vulnerability of young children and the value of unrestricted hospital visiting and overnight accommodation for their parents.
