asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish in the Official Report (a) the total number of teachers in post in State schools and colleges of further education and (b) the total number of non-teachers employed in the education service on 4 May.

In January 1979, the most recent date for which figures are available, the numbers of teachers in post and on secondment were:

  1. (a) In maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools—full-time and full-time equivalent of part-time—470,609.*
  2. (b) In further education including former colleges of education—full-time only—76,233.†

In September 1978 local authority education departments employed 213,000 full-time and 489,600 part-time non-teaching staff. The total full-time equivalent for all these staff was 423,300. The bulk of these were school-based and included laboratory technicians, caretakers, cleaners and school meals service staff.

* Includes 1,588 on secondment for one year or longer.
