HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 c57W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will review the present inadequate powers available to local authorities to control the setting up of Sunday markets, in the light of evidence sent to his Department about Wolvey parish, Warwickshire.

Mr. King

The powers currently available within my right hon. Friend's field of responsibility, under town and country planning legislation, are considered to be generally adequate; but the possibility of introducing some minor additional controls ranging beyond planning issues has been suggested by the local authority associations and is under discussion with them. The controls provided by the Sunday trading provisions of the Shops Act 1950 are a matter for my right hon. Friend the Home Secretary.
