HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc100-1W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he intends cutting back on his £33 million research and development programme this year; and, if so, how many people he forecasts will be unemployed.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Expenditure on research and development falling on the Votes for my Department is met from within two cash-limited blocks, that for health and personal social services, England—class XI vote 1—and that for administration and miscellaneous services—class XII vote 4. As such it is subject to the cash limits constraints already announced by my right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 22 May but I do not foresee people employed on research and development becoming unemployed as a result.—[Vol. 967, c. 891–907.]
