HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 c49W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how the Office of Fair Trading is to become aware of which price rises to investigate now that he has empowered it to do so.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

When our recently announced proposals are enacted, the Director General of Fair Trading will have powers to undertake investigations into areas of limited competition. In selecting those areas the Director will draw upon a wide range of sources of information including business and financial statistics, published studies and reports, as well as representations received from the public and from companies who may be affected by practices which restrict competition. My right hon. Friend will also be empowered to request the Director General to investigate prices or charges which are of major public concern.
