§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to what extent hon. Members' salaries would have been increased to date if all of the various committee of inquiry reports had been fully implemented on presentation at the time; and whether he will bear these figures in mind when giving consideration to the report to be issued by the Boyle committee on Members' salaries.
§ Mr. St. John-StevasEach substantive review of Members' salaries has recommended a level of salary appropriate at the time. Later reports supersede earlier ones and their recommendations are not therefore cumulative. The restricted implementation of the salary recommendation in the last report from the Review Body on Top Salaries—Cmnd. 6136—was the first occasion since the 1964 Lawrence report that such salary recommendations have not been implemented in full. Full implementation of that report would have resulted in a salary of £8,000 pa in June 1975. The extent to which Members' pay has fallen behind an appropriate level will certainly be a factor the Government will consider when they receive the review body's further report on this subject.
