HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc132-3W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will ensure that no cuts will be made in the number of Customs and Excise staff employed on the prevention of drug smuggling at United Kingdom ports and airports.

Mr. Peter Rees

Prevention of drug smuggling is of great importance. But in order to achieve the economies in public expenditure to which the Government are committed I cannot except any area of Customs and Excise activity from scrutiny. I therefore regret that at this stage I cannot give my hon. Friend the assurance he seeks.
