HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc63-4W
Mr. Woolmer

asked the Minister of Transport if he will consider detrunking the A650 road between the Ml and M621 motorways within the Batley and Morley constituency.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This length of road ceased to be a trunk road on 1 May 1977.

Mr. Woolmer

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will take immediate steps to review thoroughly the need for improvements in road safety facilities for pedestrians crossing the A650 road within the Batley and Morley constituency.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

On 1 May 1977 the A650 east of the Gildersome interchange was detrunked and is now the responsibility of the West Yorkshire county council. If, however, the hon. Member

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

Assuming an unrebated rent of £6.40 and unrebated rates of £2.30, the information asked for is as follows:

knows of any particular problem on the remaining 2½ miles of trunk road I shall be pleased to examine it.

Mr. Woolmer

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will take steps to ban heavy lorries with no need for local access from the A650 road within the Batley and Morley constituency between the M1 and M621 motorways.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

This length of the A650 ceased to be a trunk road on 1 May 1977. The responsibility for initiating any traffic management measures accordingly rests with the West Yorkshire county council.

Mr. Woolmer

asked the Minister of Transport if he will list the remaining stages, together with a provisional timetable, for the consideration of the proposed Drighlington bypass on the A650 road.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We hope to announce a preferred route for the bypass this summer and to publish statutory proposals early in 1980. Should a public inquiry be necessary, we would aim to hold it later that year. Proposals for acquiring land may also have to go to a public inquiry. Subject to satisfactory completion of these statutory procedures and the availability of funds, construction could start in 1982.
