HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 c538W
Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if it will be possible for Vietnamese refugees who are admitted to the United Kingdom to obtain United Kingdom citizenship and the right to settle in the United Kingdom; and, if so, how many years will enable them to qualify (a) for citizenship and (b) for the right to settle.

Mr. Raison

Refugees from Vietnam are being admitted with a view to permanent settlement. There is a statutory requirement of five years residence before a person is entitled to apply for naturalisation.
