asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many companies in Scotland have taken advantage of the selective investment scheme under section 8 of the Industry Act 1972 in each of the years since the Act was implemented; and what is the total number of employees in the companies concerned.

Offers of assistance to Scotland under the selective investment scheme have been made to one company in 1977 and two companies in 1978, involving a total amount of assistance of £23.4 million. The companies concerned employ around 21,500 people in the United Kingdom.
