HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc532-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service why he will not seek to exclude from employment in the Civil Service adherents to the Church of Scientology.

Mr. Channon

Neither the Civil Service Commissioners, who are responsible for all centrally run recruitment to the Civil Service, nor those Departments which recruit staff under powers delegated by the Commissioners, ask candidates to disclose their religious affiliations. It is a cardinal principle of the Commissioners' recruitment work that selection is made solely on merit, by fair and open competition, and that there is no discrimination in matters of religion, colour, race, politics or sex.
