HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc529-30W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether he will state the actual or estimated annual savings to the Exchequer if the House of Lords were abolished; and whether, in view of the Government's decision and policy of cutting Government expenditure, he will take action along these lines.

Mr. Channon

The estimated annual savings to the Exchequer, if the House of Lords were abolished, would be approximately £7.7 million. The Government do not intend to take the action the hon. Member suggests.
