asked the Secretary of State for Scotlandl if he wil give an estimate of how many public service jobs will be lost as a result of the Government's proposed cuts in local authority spending in each of the following employ- ment office areas: Haddingto[...], Musselburgh, Tranent, Eyemouth, Galashiels, Kelso, Hawick and Peebles.

My right hon. Friend has asked for strict economy in manpower, but it is up to local authorities to decide how to operate this policy.
