HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 c526W
Mr. Butcher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, excluding teachers and lecturers, how many people were employed in the State education service in 1964, 1974 and 1978.

Dr. Boyson

Available information is that the numbers of non-teaching staff employed by English local education authorities were as follows:

gather from local education authorities figures showing their estimated increases or decreases in secondary school and primary school population over the next three years.

Dr. Boyson

No. Projections are made within my Department of school populations at national level for many years ahead. It is considered that comparable statistics covering the forecasts of individual local education authorities would not be of sufficient additional value to warrant central collection and processing. However, estimates for the coming academic year are supplied annually by each authority, along with other material, to the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and are published by that body. The edition for 1979–80, "Education Estimates Statistics 1979–80" is expected to appear shortly. A copy will be available in the Library.
