§ Mr. Cryerasked the Secretary of State for Industry what representations he has received regarding wool scouring effluent charges for the West Riding wool-scouring industry; whether the French wool-scouring industry will phase out its subsidies by 1980; and whether he has considered any proposals from the National Water Council regarding changes in the charging system for effluent.
§ Mr. David MitchellThere has been correspondence at ministerial and at: official level with the Wool Textile Delegation about the recommendations in the report of the working party on charges for water and treatment of trade effluent. I intend to receive a delegation from the industry to discuss the subject in the near future. My understanding is that the French system of Government financial support for investment in the wool scouring industry will be phased out by the end of 1980. I have not had any proposals about changing the system of charging for the treatment of trade effluent made to me by the National Water Council. This would be a matter for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment.
