§ Mr. Charles Irvingasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he has taken to improve conditions for homeless people staying at the Camberwell reception centre with regard to (a) provision of sheets and pillowcases, curtains, carpets and personal lockers, (b) enforcement of public health regulations regarding toilets, wash hand-basins, baths and showers, (c) appointment of staff qualified in welfare rights, and (d) appointment of qualified housing staff to advise homeless people on their housing rights under the Housing (Homeless Persons) Act 1977.

§ Mrs. ChalkerI refer my hon. Friend to my reply to his earlier related question on 5 July. The special review referred to will cover the service provided by the staff and the facilities available to the men accommodated at Camberwell reception centre. The answers to the specific questions are
(a) None. Sheets, pillow cases and wardrobes have been provided for some years for men who agree to stay at the centre as part of the process of resettlement; they are not issued to those using it on a casual basis—173 out of a total of 416 on 23 July. Curtains are provided only in the sick bay; carpets are not provided.
