HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc376-7W
Sir Raymond Gower

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the Welsh Council's future programme of work; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

I have decided to disband the Welsh Council. I am today writing to the chairman, Sir Melvyn Rosser, and members of the Council thanking them for the contribution they have made to the Council's work and discussion of a wide range of social, cultural and economic affairs in recent years.

I shall continue to welcome advice from both sides of industry, local authorities and other bodies in Wales, and I intend to maintain close relations with such organisations. It is also my hope that there will be increased parliamentary discussion and scrutiny of Welsh affairs by debate in the Welsh Grand Committee and in a Select Committee on Welsh Affairs.
