§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the difficulty to the public of finding public telephone booths in a satisfactory condition when wishing to telephone in emergencies for the police, fire and other services, due to such telephones being vandalised, he will arrange for the police telephones to be used for these purposes, without coin pre-payment; and if he will provide funds to establish more of such telephones in areas where there has been an increase in the crime of mugging.
§ Mr. BrittanThe few public police telephones that are available can be used for emergency calls without charge. It is386W unlikely that providing more such telephones would help; they would probably be as vulnerable to vandalism as public telephones in similar places.
