The number of nursing and midwifery staff employed in National Health Service hospitals in England in the years 1971 to 1977—expressed as whole-time equivalents—is shown in the following table. The figures include qualified nurses, nurse learners and unqualified nursing staff but exclude agency nurses and midwives and nursing cadets. Figures are not yet available for 1978. I shall circulate in theOfficial Report the figures for earlier years when they have been assembled.
