HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc392-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why Mr. Joao Perestrello, a Portuguese business man, was allowed into the United Kingdom to take over Kendal and Dent Ltd; in what year he was allowed into the United Kingdom; and in that year, how many prospective New Commonwealth immigrants and how many non-EEC nationals were refused entry, respectively, and how many were returned to their countries of origin on landing at United Kingdom entry ports.

Mr. Raison

It would be contrary to normal practice to disclose detailed information from immigration records about individuals.

The numbers of persons refused leave to enter the United Kingdom are given in Tables 1(a) and 1(b) of the annual Command Paper, "Control of Immigration: Statistics". Those refused leave to enter are, in accordance with the immigration rules, normally returned to the country in which they boarded the ship or aircraft which brought them here, but information about the numbers returned to particular countries is not readily available and could not be obtained without disproportionate cost.
