HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc431-2W
Mr. Field

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much of the total tax revenue lost as a result of the cuts in direct taxation announced in the Budget including the changes announced in the caretaker Budget, has benefited (a) taxpayers who were paying about the standard rate before the Budget, (b) taxpayers paying the standard rate before the Budget and (c) taxpayers who were paying at the 25 per cent. rate before the Budget; and how many taxpayers were in those categories before the Budget.

Mr. Peter Rees,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 24 July 1979; Vol. 971, c.178],gave the following answer:

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Barking (Miss Richardson) on 17 July 1979.

Mr. Field

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the total number of taxpayers as a subset of the total number of taxpayers responsible for children counting husbands and wives as single units.

Mr. Peter Rees,

pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 24 July 1979; Vol. 971, c.178],gave the following answer:

I am not clear what the hon. Member has in mind. If he is interested in the number of taxpayers responsible for children as a subset of the total number of taxpayers, counting earning wives who are taxpayers separately from their husbands, the latest estimate for 1979–80 is 10.2 million out of a total of 25.6 million.
