§ Mrs. Knightasked the Minister of Transport what steps he is taking to combat violence by football supporters on British Railways and to safeguard ordinary passengers against this violence and abuse; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Fowler, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 23 July 1979; Vol. 971, c.70], gave the following answer:
The British Railways Board has taken a number of steps to combat violence on the railways. These include measures to segregate football supporters from other travellers, arrangements for better stewarding of trains, and a ban on the sale of alcohol on trains carrying only football supporters. The Board knows 472W that it has my full support in all these measures.
