HC Deb 25 July 1979 vol 971 cc320-1W
55. Mr Denis Howell

asked the Secre-State for the Environment what he is will make a statement about the Government's programme for the reduction of lead within the environment and their timetable for the introduction of measures designed to this end and specifically about food and petrol.

Mr. Fox

New lead in food regulations will be made by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the near future. The programme to identify areas where levels of lead in tap water are too high, and to deal with the problem, is continuing. The permitted limit of lead in petrol will be reduced to 0.40 g/1 in January 1981.

The Government will be considering what further measures may be needed in the light of the review which is now taking place of the health effects of lead from all sources.
