HC Deb 25 July 1979 vol 971 c255W
40. Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a further statement on his policy on gipsies.

63. Mr. Walters

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will bring forward proposals to restrict the siting of caravan sites for use by gipsies near residential housing.

Mr. Monro

We remain concerned about the current level of gipsy caravan site provision and the Department will continue to provide advice and guidance to support further efforts by local authorities along the lines recommended in the Cripps report. We are considering the possibility of introducing changes to the existing legislative framework, including provision for Government grants, but the location of sites is a matter for local decision and not for legislation.
