HC Deb 24 July 1979 vol 971 c204W
Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the disease tinnitus.

Dr. Vaughan

Tinnitus is a particularly distressing complaint, affecting a large number of people including some with normal hearing as well as some with impaired hearing, which can be present in a wide variety of different diseases. The main Government-funded body sponsoring research into this condition is the Medical Research Council, using funds provided by the Department of Education and Science and the Health Departments. Research is also being carried out by the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, which recently launched the British Tinnitus Association with the aim of concentrating interests in this condition.
