HC Deb 24 July 1979 vol 971 cc197-8W
Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what financial involvement the Scottish Development Agency has in the St. Enoch Square development in Glasgow; if this involvement has met with his approval; and if he will define the nature of the involvement.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The agency is committed to redeveloping the St. Enoch Square site, having been brought into the development by the previous Administration to ensure a co-ordinated approach. To date some £6.0 million has been spent in acquiring and clearing the site and in preparatory development work, but as the project is still in the early design state it is not possible to estimate with any accuracy the final cost of the completed development.

Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proposals and possible financial options he has received from the Scottish Development Agency regarding the proposed development at St. Enoch Square, Glasgow, for the Ministry of Defence job dispersal.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

None. The agency has responsibility for the overall plans for the redevelopment of St. Enoch Square but it is not concerned with the detail or the financing of any Government Department components.

Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the intention of the Scottish Development Agency in appointing a London firm of surveyors for the proposed development at St. Enoch Square, Glasgow; and what charges or fees have been paid to this firm since the appointment was made.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The appointment of professional firms is a matter for the agency and I have drawn my hon. Friend's question to the chairman's attention. I understand however that a number of consultant firms, including Scottish-based ones, are engaged in the St. Enoch Square redevelopment.
