HC Deb 23 July 1979 vol 971 c29W
Mr. Stoddart

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if, in the light of the obligations imposed under the European Communities Act and the Treaty of Rome, he will review his policy of refusing entry to the United Kingdom to nationals of countries of the EEC who wish to study or participate in the work of the Church of Scientology;

(2) if, in the light of his decision to allow Mr. Ole Govmand to enter the United Kingdom to study scientology, he will review the cases of all other persons who have been refused entry to the United Kingdom on the sole ground that they wished to study or participate in the work of the Church of Scientology.

Mr. Whitelaw

I am considering the present policy as regards scientologists.

Mr. Stoddart

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, following his decision to allow Mr. Ole Govmand to enter the United Kingdom to study scientology, Members of the European Assembly will be permitted to enter the United Kingdom to undertake or participate in any activities the nature of which has led to the exclusion from the United Kingdom of other foreign nationals.

Mr. Whitelaw

Non-British Members of the European Parliament would normally be admitted to this country without difficulty but they do not have an absolute right of entry.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in view of the fact that Mr. Ole Govmand, a Danish Member of Parliament, has been admitted into Great Britain as a declared scientologist to work for the Church of Scientology, if he will deport this man as an undesirable person in view of his membership of the Church of Scientology.

Mr. Whitelaw

No.
