HC Deb 23 July 1979 vol 971 c86W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors born in the Asian subcontinent are working in the United Kingdom; and if he is satisfied that the tests which were introduced in mid-1975 in both medical knowledge and the ability to communicate in English are proving satisfactory.

Dr. Vaughan

The latest available information shows that on 30 September 1975, 10,238 civilian doctors born in the Asian subcontinent were active in medicine in Great Britain. These figures are not collected on a United Kingdom basis. The standard required of overseas-qualified doctors who wish to practise medicine in the United Kingdom is entirely a matter for the General Medical Council.
