HC Deb 23 July 1979 vol 971 cc61-2W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, having transferred the portrait of Cardinal Newman from public view in the Committee Corridor to his private office, and in view of his reply to the hon. Member for Bothwell (Mr. Hamilton), inviting hon. Members to make a pilgrimage to his office to see the aforesaid portrait, if he will make arrangements for hon. Members to bring school parties who may be especially interested in this portrait to visit his office for the purpose of viewing it or if he will otherwise return it to public view within the Palace.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

I would be happy to make the necessary arrangements on request by hon. Members.

Mr. Cohen

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, arising from his reply to the hon. Member for Bothwell (Mr. Hamilton) concerning the transfer from the Committee Corridor to his private office of the portrait of Cardinal Newman, whether he obtained permission from the National Portrait Gallery before this transfer took place.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

I have informed the director of the National Portrait Gallery about the present whereabouts of the picture and he is content with its present location, subject to a further inspection.
