asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many dwellings remain without the standard basic amenities as defined in the Housing Act 1974 in the private rent sector;

(2) how many dwellings remain without the standard basic amenities as defined by the Housing Act 1974.

About 1.5 million dwellings, of which 0.6 million were private rented, were estimated from the results of the 1976 English house condition survey to be lacking one or more of the five basic amenities as defined in the Housing Act 1974.
