HL Deb 12 July 1979 vol 401 c1123WA
Lord KENNET

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many local councils collect used lubricating oil, how the work is financed, how much oil is collected this way, and what becomes of it.

Lord BELLWIN

Some local authorities provide collection facilities for waste oil at "civic amenity sites"; others arrange for and publicise collection facilities at selected garages throughout their areas. In the United Kingdom as a whole some 60 per cent. of the 500,000 tonnes of waste oil arising annually is recovered. Most of this is used for heating purposes but about one-sixth is regenerated for re-use as lubricating oil. I regret that answers to the other questions could be provided only at disproportionate expense.
