HC Deb 04 July 1979 vol 969 c615W
Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has to ensure that the Budget proposals will not increase unemployment in Wales.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Unemployment levels in Wales depend on a number of factors, the main one being the general state of the United Kingdom economy. The Government's policy, as exemplified in the Budget, is to stimulate investment which in turn should create new employment opportunities.

Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what were the unemployment figures for males and females in the Ogmore constituency on Friday 29 June.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The area corresponding most closely to the Ogmore constituency is that covered by the Bridgend and Maesteg local offices of the Department of Employment. The most recent information relates to mid-June, when there were 1,577 males and 774 females registered as unemployed in these areas.
