Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what estimate he has made of the increase in public spending which would result from the general implementation of his policy of disposal of council housing in each of the next three years.

Mr. Stanley

Increased sales of council houses will lead to a reduction rather than an increase in public expenditure over the next three years. The amount will depend on the number of houses sold, the price—less discount, and the extent to which the sales are financed from private sources.
