Mr. Marlow

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if, as part of the Government's plans to cut Government spending, he is considering the possibility of linking the remuneration and job security of assistant secretaries in the Civil Service with those of Members of this House.

The reductions in expenditure for 1979–80 were made as part of an urgently needed reduction in total expenditure. It is not appropriate to consult outside bodies on an issue of this kind.
