HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 c443W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) whether he will cause an investigation to be made to establish to what extent national production would rise and there would be a saving in public and private costs of administration of PAYE and the collection, etc., of revenue if taxation on earnings were abolished;

(2) whether he will consider abolishing all tax on earned income.

Mr. Peter Rees

No. The revenue forgone would be of the order of £23 billion and no alternative sources of revenue of that order readily suggest themselves.
