asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, in the light of public expenditure cuts, if he will make a statement as to how the GEAR—Glasgow eastern area renewal—project will be affected.

§ Mr. Rifkind
As I indicated at the GEAR governing committee meeting on 4 June, the Government are anxious to secure the success of the GEAR project. The participants in the project will individually have to review their priorities in the light of the public expenditure cuts, but I would hope that they would continue to give the same relative priority to GEAR as in the past.
