Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the Government's policy on failing to stop and drunken driving in the light of the recent statement and figures issued by the chief constable of Manchester.

Mr. Whitelaw

The number of motorists who fail to stop after a road accident is a matter for concern and my Department, in consultation with the Department of Transport, is considering how best to deal with the problem.
