HC Deb 31 January 1979 vol 961 c430W
Mr. Lawrence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many of the Vietnamese boat people have been given refuge in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

A total of 1,122 refugees from Vietnam have been given permission to enter or remain in the United Kingdom since the fall of Saigon in May 1975. Of these, 761 were "boat people".

As I stated in reply to a question by my hon. Friend the Member for Southampton, Test (Mr. Gould) on 17 January, arrangements are in hand to admit 1,500 Vietnamese former "boat people" over the next 12 months to 15 months in addition to any who may be admitted under existing policy.—[Vol. 960, c. 761–3.]
