HC Deb 24 January 1979 vol 961 cc182-3W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what has been the cost to central Government funds in each of the past five years of repairs and renovations to establishments, other than Buckingham Palace, lived in by members of the Royal Family.

Mr. Marks

The figures are:

(2) if he remains satisfied with the functioning of local authority public cleansing and refuse collection services; what are his main concerns; and to what parts of the United Kingdom they apply;

(3) what measures he is taking to ensure that local authority emergency services are functioning normally;

(4) if he remains satisfied with the functioning of local authority emergency services; what are his main concerns; and to what parts of the United Kingdom they apply;

(5) how many local authorities are affected by unofficial industrial action by manual workers.

Mr. Shore

I receive regular reports about local authority services and the effects of industrial action upon them. These reports indicate that, although disruption was considerable on 22 January, no unmanageable problems arose. I shall continue to keep in close touch with the situation.

Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many meetings he has attended in the past week connected with measures being taken to ensure the normal functioning of local authorities' public cleansing and refuse collection services;

(2) how many meetings he has attended in the past week connected with measures being taken to ensure satisfactory functioning of local authority emergency services;

(3) how many meetings he has attended in the past week connected with measures being taken to ensure satisfactory functioning of local authority services.

Mr. Shore

During the past week I have attended many meetings both formal and informal which included discussion of these matters but it would not be realistic to attempt to put them into the categories suggested by the hon. Member.
