asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many cadetships were awarded during the last 12 months by the Army; and, of these, how many were awarded to entrants from Headmasters' Conference schools and how many from State schools.

In the financial year 1977–78 the Army awarded 52 cadetships. Of these, 38 were awarded to applicants from Headmasters' Conference schools and 14 to applicants from State schools.
