HC Deb 07 February 1979 vol 962 cc178-81W
Mr. Goodlad

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the average number of vacancies for employment in each district in Cheshire in the last 12 months for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures for the previous five years.

Mr. Golding

Annual average numbers of notified unfilled vacancies are not available for local areas and could be produced only at disproportionate cost. The following table gives information for January and July each year, starting in January 1973. The figures relate only to vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices; vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication, the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together.

Because of industrial action by some staff in the Department of Employment group, figures for January 1975 and January 1977 are not available.
