HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c42W
Mr. Tim Renton

asked the Lord President of the Council what steps he is taking to ensure that, as occurred during the EEC referendum campaign, those representing either the Vote Yes campaign or the Vote No campaign in the Scottish and Welsh referenda are given equal broadcasting and television time over the next five weeks.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Lord President of the Council (1) what steps he is taking to ensure that broadcasting time between those advocating "No" and "Yes", respectively, in the Scottish referendum is evenly divided;

(2) what steps he is taking to ensure that broadcasting time is evenly divided between those advocating "No" and those advocating "Yes" in the Welsh referendum.

Mr. Foot

This is a matter for the broadcasting authorities, although they do have consultations with the parties.

Mr. Sproat

asked the Lord President of the Council if he will intervene with the BBC and with the IBA to ensure that allocation of broadcastig time over the Scottish and Welsh referendums is divided evenly between those speaking on behalf of No and Yes campaigns, respectively, and not between the political parties.

Mr. Foot

No.
