asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he can now inform the Whitley Council of the view of the Government in connection with the nurses' pay claim, in view of the impor tant meeting taking place on Tuesday 6 February.

Mr. Ennals

The nurses and midwives Whitley Council next meets on Tuesday 13 February. I expect to be able to take my discussions with them further before that date.
