asked the Secretary of State for Energy what was the total amount paid in grants and subsidies from Government to the National Coal Board in 1978.

Mr. Eadie

As my right hon. Friend informed the House on 24 November last, the Government have now agreed, subject to parliamentary approval of Supplementary Estimates, a total of grants to the National Coal Board in this financial year of £124 million. In the year ended March 1978 the total of grants paid was £75 million.
