HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 cc52-3W
Mr. Grocott

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what contribution he receives from the revenues of the Isle of Man Government towards the cost of joint services; and how the contribution is calculated.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The Isle of Man makes a voluntary contribution each year towards United Kingdom expenditure on defence and other common services. The amount of the contribution is expressed as a percentage of the Isle of Man's share of the duties and taxes collected by Her Majesty's Customs and Excise under the Common Purse Agreement. For the period 1 April 1978 to 31 March 1981 the percentage has been reduced from 5 per cent. to 2½ per cent. The Isle of Man Government have indicated that the reason for the reduction is mainly the need to pay an unexpectedly large bill in connection with the cost of rebuilding the landing stage at Liverpool which is used by boats going to the Isle of Man.
