HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c32W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how much development aid has been paid out of public money to International Computers Limited; and how much has been repaid up to 31 January 1979.

Mr. Les Huckfield

£13½ million was paid to International Computers (Holdings) Ltd. between 1968 and 1971. This was a non-recoverable grant.

As decided by the previous Conservative Government, £40 million in development aid was paid between 1972 and 1976. This is recoverable by a formula based on profit in the seven company financial years ending on 30 September 1984. None has been recovered to date.

In addition, ICL has received a number of shared cost development contracts under schemes which are open to the industry generally.

It is not the practice to reveal payments made to individual companies, but over 20 per cent. has been recovered.

Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will list the names, dates of appointments and, where relevant, their dates of resignation of the Government directors appointed to International Computers Limited.

Mr. Les Huckfield

Mr. J. C. Duckworth was appointed to serve as Government director of International Computers (Holdings) Ltd.—now ICL Ltd.—on 22 May 1968. His appointment ended on 24 May 1976, when the Department of Industry's shares in the company were transferred to the National Enterprise Board, and the right to appoint a Government director ceased.
