HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 c43W
Mr. Home Robertson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish figures showing the total revenue from capital transfer tax levied on transfers of agricultural land within the families of working farmers in each year since the introduction of the tax, and also figures showing the value of the tax relief granted to working farmers in the respective years.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

It is not possible, from the information available, to distinguish transfers of agricultural land within the families of working farmers from other such transfers. Because of delays in the administration of estates it will be some time before actual figures for the full year cost of agricultural relief— currently estimated at £10 million—are available; but the value of the relief, in terms of tax, in assessments made in 1976–77—the first year in which the amount was significant—was 1–7 million. Figures for 1977–78 are not yet available.
