asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will include Knowsley council amongst those authorities in which the pilot scheme for paying a grant to 16 to 19year-olds is operated.

It is too early to say which areas will be selected for the pilot scheme. My Department is still awaiting some replies to its letter of 22 December which asked local education authorities to consider whether they wished to put themselves forward for possible selection, and the process of selection will take a little time once the list of volunteers is complete.
