Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many persons in the area covered by the Macclesfield constituency have now been laid off as a result of the lorry drivers' dispute;

(2) how many persons in the textile industry have now been laid off as a result of the lorry drivers' dispute and how many of these workers are in the North-West region.

Mr. Golding

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 30 January 1979; Vol. 961, c. 403–4], gave the following information:

Estimates of lay-offs have been made only on broad bases and separate figures for all lay-offs are not generally available for local areas or for industries.
